Danny Drinkwater did not have a good time at Chelsea. The English midfielder, hero of the remembered champion Leicester, signed with the Blues five years ago, but his stay was far from expected and he played just 23 games.
On June 30, his relationship with the club ended and now he spoke with Sky Sports about the ordeal that lived in the cast of Stamford Bridge.
“I feel relieved because it was not a good situation for me or for the club”, began recounting about his departure. “I am angry at how everything has been given and how they have treated me (…) I can’t blame the club. To some extent I can’t blame myself either. I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault because there have been a lot of uncertainties.”he added.
Drinkwater revealed that a year after his arrival, manager Maurizio Sarri told him with an hour to go until the transfer book closed, that he did not have him. “I arrived at the last hour of the market when Zola (his assistant) tells me that he does not consider that he is in the club’s plans. I was like ‘what?’”counted.
“I have a young son. He is my priority… Why are you telling me this one hour before the market closes? I need time”he told the coaching staff.
The midfielder also assured that he feels that he lost his best football years. “Yes, you feel like you’ve wasted those five years (…) If I had stayed at Leicester, if I hadn’t been injured, if they had treated me better… it’s all ‘what if…’he claimed.
Finally, he confessed that he suffers from mental health problems, which caused him to make some mistakes off the court. “I suffer from mental health problems. My grandfather died, my father was diagnosed with leukemia, and I lost my dog. I started driving under the influence of alcohol. It was not me. I made a huge mistake. In addition, I was also fighting for my son (…) he was lost ”he indicated.
“When football goes well, everything else seems easier, but when it doesn’t go well, everything becomes heavier”sentenced.
