During a meeting with the Conservative People’s Party’s party board in Odense on Friday, Søren Pape Poulsen suffered a brain hemorrhage and was taken to hospital, where he died on Saturday.
Poulsen was the leader for the party often called The Conservatives since 2014.
“Everyone who has been lucky enough to know Søren knows that he was a caring person. Most could even feel it, even if they had only met him briefly. He always thought of others first,” says the party’s general secretary Søren Vandsø in a statement.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen received the news with great sadness.
“Conservative in body and soul with great commitment to Denmark’s security and legal policy”, she describes the politician colleague.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) has also commented on the sudden death. On X he writes:
“Hearing the sad news that Søren Pape Poulsen, party leader of the Danish Conservative People’s Party, has died far too soon. Thank you for our good cooperation over several years. My thoughts are with Søren Pape’s family and friends.”
Søren Pape Poulsen was elected to the Norwegian Parliament for the first time in 2015.
From 2016 to 2019, he was Denmark’s Minister of Justice in Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s government.
The Conservatives are part of the blue bloc in the Norwegian Parliament and received 5.5 percent of the vote in the last election. Since 2022, Denmark is governed by a central government.
Søren Pape Poulsen was 52 years old.
