Danish photographer Mads Nissen wins World Press Photo | for the second time NOW

For the second time, a photo by the Danish photographer Mads Nissen has been named World Press Photo. The organization of the prize announced on Thursday that the photo The First Embrace has been voted press photo of the year.

In the photo, 85-year-old Rosa Luzia Lunardi is embraced by nurse Adriana Silva da Costa Souza in a corona-stricken nursing home in São Paulo, Brazil. This was the first hug Lunardi received in five months. The two are separated by plastic allowing for cuddling.

For Nissen it is the second time that he has won the World Press Photo of the Year. He also won the title in 2014 when he made a report of a Russian gay couple.

De World Press Photo Story of the Year is Habibi from Antonio Faccilongo. The winning series shows love stories set against the background of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The images show its impact on Palestinian families. The work of a Dutch photographer has also been awarded. Jasper Doest receives first prize in the Nature category with the series Pandemic Pigeons – A Love Story.

The winning photos can normally be viewed in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Due to the corona crisis, the exhibition can be viewed digitally from next weekend.
