A large number of Danish opposition parties have announced that they are against the government’s plan to ban the burning of the Koran under certain circumstances.

Freedoms always have more weight than religious dogma, said the statement, which was supported by seven of the nine opposition parties, from the leftist Unity List to the nationally conservative Danish People’s Party.
The parties call on the centre-left coalition to reconsider its position.
The opposition accuses the government of bowing to pressure from countries that themselves do not meet minimum standards of civil rights.
It is unacceptable that the government is forced to act with the help of force and threats, the joint statement said.
However, Justice Minister Pēters Hummelgårds told DR radio that the opposition’s announcement will not change the government’s position.
