Danish Defense Minister Lund Poulsen stated that Russia’s ability to produce military equipment has grown “tremendously”.
“The possibility that Moscow could test NATO Article 5 and unity within three to five years cannot be ruled out.”
“This information did not correspond to NATO’s conclusions in 2023. This is new data that is only now coming out,” said Danish Defense Minister Lund Poulsen. Denmark itself is not currently under threat from Russia, but the alliance could face Russian cyberattacks aimed at destabilizing one of its member states.
“Russia probably has a desire to do something like that. Now they also have every opportunity to reach a significant military capacity faster than we imagined. There is a reason for real concern,” the minister emphasized.
This change in perception of the Russian threat comes shortly after warnings from other European NATO leaders in recent weeks. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned of a possible Russian attack within five to eight years.
The German publication “Bild”, citing sources, warned that Russia could try to attack Europe in late 2024 or early 2025, when the US “will no longer be the leader” and thus help European allies only belatedly.
