Danish admits to being surprised by rival’s break

In addition to Jai Hindley, the other big winner of the day at Tour’2023 was the defending champion, Dane Jonas Vingegaard. Second in step 5the Jumbo-Visma cyclist managed to gain time on his great rival Tadej Pogacar, after breaking the Slovenian on the last climb of the day, something that even surprised him.
“On paper this stage wasn’t in my favour, but on the last climb I felt I had good legs. I told Sepp to go to the front and attacked. I was surprised when Pogacar couldn’t follow me. I wanted to test him a bit. , my legs were really fine,” he revealed.
The Dane is now second overall, 47 seconds behind Hindley, with the UAE Emirates leader 1.40 minutes behind the yellow jersey. “I’m super happy with my performance today, having already got a minute of advantage over him”, he assumed, without wanting, however, to present himself as the big favorite to defend the title: “I don’t know. our best and we’ll see where that takes us”.
