The Danish company Hybrid Power System Group (HPSG) will invest 1.2 billion dollars (more than 1 billion euros) in the construction of a large hydrogen power plant in Suriname. The expectation is that this project will create at least six hundred jobs for Suriname, it became clear on Saturday at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paramaribo.
A lot of energy is needed to run the hydrogen power plant. The Danish company is therefore starting the construction of a solar and wind power plant of 100 megawatts on an old plantation in the Commewijne district in eastern Suriname. According to HPSG director Benny Falk, this is an ideal location because of the space and the low land prices. The nearby river and ocean make transporting the hydrogen relatively easy.
For Suriname it is a favorable side effect that the country is getting an extra power plant that can provide 100 megawatts, also in view of other large investments that the former Dutch colony expects. Minister Albert Ramdin of International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS) is very satisfied with this deal. It is the first agreement that Suriname concludes within the framework of the so-called Foreign Direct Invest policy.
HPSG is a company that has been developing hydrogen energy parks for about seven years. The company sees Suriname par excellence as a country that can become a leader in the field of hydrogen.
