– No, unfortunately we have no suspects.
This is what Ewa Gun-Westford, spokesperson for the Swedish police, says to the Danish BT newspaper, after the last few weeks there have been a number of attacks on Danish-registered cars that have driven along the E65 to and from Ystad, around 50 minutes east of Malmö.
Police have received 60 reports, after both stones, wheel bolts and other objects have been thrown at the cars. 35 of the motorists have so far been given the opportunity to explain themselves.
– It takes a little longer due to the language. We have to document and write everything down, so it’s quite complicated, Gun-Westford explains.
Driving detour
One of those who has experienced having the car attacked is Carsten Petersen.
– At first I thought it was a gunshot. Had the stone hit ten centimeters to the left, my wife would have had it in her head, says Petersen to the Swede Expressen.
He says that he has driven to Ystad once more since the incident, but that he has then chosen another route.
It seems that it is in the same place along the E65 that it happens.
Possible theory
Although the stretch where the attacks have taken place is in Sweden, only Danish cars have had their windows smashed. Social media is now discussing what could be the reason for this.
One theory is that some residents along the stretch are tired of the Danes using the stretch as a thoroughfare and rough driving, while another theory is that some Swedes are frustrated that the Danes can travel into Sweden, but that the Swedes can not do it opposite due to coronary restrictions.
The police, for their part, do not want to comment on any of the theories.
“We have our thoughts on the motive, but we are prepared to say that we have not stuck to a theory,” Gun-Westford told BT.
