Danilevich’s Poetry Journey: From Norway to Nestástot

As Danilevich tells host Inese Vaikule, in the 60th anniversary original concerts “Manas tautas deja” there is a poem written by him in the opening part, but the most in the show “Nestastot” – about 20. Asked about when he started to write poetry in the first place, the choreographer remembers an old episode :

“We went to Norway. Then I somehow tried some kind of brochure, took it to the gas station and started writing, just describing that trip. About – a toothbrush, toothpaste, the burden of the road is ready. Something like this here.”

On the same trip, the descriptions featured the names and activities of all the travelers – in a fun form. “After the reaction when I read it, everyone was extremely surprised and at the same time very funny and laughing. Then I understood – oh, what to do now? Then, slowly, sometimes some thoughts, some ideas that could be written about appeared, and then I also tried to catch those quills flying through the air somewhere and write them down,” says Danilevičs.

About 20 of those poems, which are not ashamed to be shown, are included in the performance “Nestástot”, but there are many more in the choreographer’s dowry. “There are still some villains who should not be shown to people. “There is a bit of a mess – unfinished drafts – because the idea has come, but the words haven’t come together, but that’s sometimes cool – you come back to some former idea and realize that the end or middle of the poem just flies away,” he says. “The words are coming.” To Vaikule’s statement that there is more to dance time than poems, Danilevich answers very convincingly: “Yes!”
