HALLE / WESTPHALIA. The reigning tennis world champion Daniil Medvedev from Russia will be at the start for the first time at the 28th Noventi Open in Halle / Westphalia from June 12th to 20th. The Swiss top star Roger Federer, Japan’s top player Kei Nishikori and Medvedev compatriot Karen Khachanov have also accepted.
„We are proud and happy that Daniil is celebrating his debut in Halle as the new tennis superstar this year ”, says tournament director Ralf Weber about the significant coup for this year’s ATP 500 grass event. “As a player and character, he has long been one of the outstanding personalities on the ATP Tour.”
Medvedev is also looking forward to his first appearance at the Noventi Open: “I’ve heard so many great things about the tournament from colleagues. Of course my goal is to win. But the competition will be very strong. ”Most recently, Medvedev made headlines with his tournament success in Marseille and his jump to second place in the world rankings: With this historic advance, a player who was not Roger Federer, Rafael, was in this position for the first time since 2005 Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray is called.
The Muscovite native has been one of the consistently strongest players in recent months. First, Medvedev won the title at the last Masters competition in 2020 in Paris, then he won the ATP Finals, where he defeated the top three in the world rankings on his way to the final with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and in the final Dominic Thiem.
Also this year, Daniil Medvedev continued on the road to success, with ten wins, only at the ATP Cup, which he won with his Russian teammates. And then at the Australian Open, where Djokovic was only able to stop him in the final.
