The ski family is already very excited in early summer. This is not least due to the plan of the World Cup organizers in Cortina to postpone the world title bouts planned for next February due to the effects of the corona pandemic by one year.

Kitzbühel and Adelboden champion Daniel Yule (27) shakes his head: “In my opinion, the staging of a World Cup in the winter of 2022 makes little sense.” Yule, who has held the role of FIS athlete spokesman for a year, explains his aversion as follows: «In the winter of 2022, the Olympic Games in China will be the ultimate highlight of the season. If you were to host a World Cup a week later, the result would be that the interest of the international media would not be as great as in a winter in which only the World Cup is on the program. And even with some athletes, the air at a World Cup after the Olympic Games should be a bit out. »

But what does the alternative proposal from the Valais look like? Would he rather host a World Cup in Cortina next winter without an audience? The most successful Swiss slalom skier in ski history rejects his hands again. «I can’t imagine title fights without an audience. But I am advocating a postponement of the World Cup to 2024. This winter there is still no major Alpine event planned apart from the World Cup. » Yule is aware that he could cut his own flesh with this demand: «I am currently in top shape and therefore it would be best for me personally if the World Cup were as quick as possible. There is no guarantee that I will be in great shape in 2024. But in this case I can’t think about my personal interests, I want the best for our sport. »
