It’s a perfect match – and in two respects!
Daniel Völz (39) was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus 18 years ago. A shock for the former RTL Rosenkavalier, who admits: Living with the disease is often anything but easy. But he gets support from his girlfriend, who is, appropriately enough, an aspiring doctor.
“Anyone who knows someone who has diabetes knows that it can also take a toll on you mentally.”
Daniel Völz has type 1 diabetes – an autoimmune disease that leads to insulin deficiency and is currently not curable. This means patients have to inject insulin throughout their lives to regulate their blood sugar. “I would be lying if I said it was an easy thing. It’s not easy, especially mentally. Anyone who knows someone who has diabetes knows that it can also destroy you mentally,” he explains in an RTL interview at the Diabetes Charity Gala in Berlin.

Just recently there was another moment in which he simply felt helpless. “I recently ate something and thought: OK, good, you do the math, inject your unit and then everything will be fine. And then the blood sugar still goes through the roof. And you just think: Why? I’ve done everything, haven’t I? Then you inject again, then you have a low… It’s really a rollercoaster ride,” says the bachelor from 2018 (Stream here on RTL+) further.
For Daniel Völz, it is a matter of the heart to draw attention to the disease.

If blood sugar drops rapidly, it can be extremely dangerous for those affected. The fear of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is always present. Patients like Daniel, who also live alone, always have to ask themselves: “Who will find me? Do I at least have to put something on in case I’m found?”
