Daniel Vogel, player of the week, scores twice for A-League bottom team GW Ostönnen against Sönnern: “We haven’t given up on ourselves yet.”
Soest – Last Sunday, the bottom of the A district league, GW Ostönnen, scored against championship contender and promotion candidate SC Sönnern in the away home game on the artificial turf at Ardey. The Soesters were even ahead 2-1 at one point and narrowly missed out on their first win of the season. Daniel Vogel, who scored two Ostönner goals in a 2-2 draw, played a large part in winning the points – the third in the championship round. A long period of suffering lies behind him. In an interview with the editorial team, he reveals how he assesses his comeback after the cruciate ligament tear and what he still wants to achieve with Ostönnen this season.
Congratulations on your strong performance against Sönnern, which you crowned with two goals! How do you rate Ostönnen’s performance and how happy were you about winning a point against such a strong opponent?
Thank you! Of course there was great joy after the game, as no one had expected us to win a point. SC Sönnern is one of the top four teams in the league this season with BW Büderich, SC Lippetal and SV Höingen. That’s why I think almost all of us would have signed a draw straight away before the game. After the game I was actually a bit disappointed for a moment, as we held up very well for long stretches of the game and were able to create significantly better chances to score. In the game you simply saw that, despite the very weak first half of the season, we have not given up on ourselves and that we can play much better football than we have shown so far.

Your team was 0-1 down when you equalized with a wonderful free kick. Your best goal ever?
First of all, I’m always happy when I can help my team with my goals. As an offensive player, I could probably score a goal or two in my career. I don’t think it was the prettiest, but it’s definitely one of the nicer goals I’ve scored.

With your second goal you turned the game around. Scoring goals has been Ostönnen’s biggest shortcoming so far, which is why they still haven’t managed their first win of the season. Do you think the knot has now been broken?
I really hope so! Unfortunately, despite some good opportunities, we haven’t been able to score goals so well this season. Accordingly, the training was changed a little by our trainer, Dirk Symmangk. We have worked a lot on our teamwork in training over the last few weeks, especially on offense, and were then able to reward ourselves with a point win against Sönnern that was very important for us. I’m confident that we’ll be able to continue the game after the winter break and score a lot more goals.
However, it is now winter break. Is this a disadvantage for Ostönnen because you can’t use the momentum or is it an advantage to attack again after good preparation?
I think the winter break comes at exactly the right time. We were able to end the year with a positive experience and can start preparing for the winter euphorically. We are also still struggling with a few ailing players who will be able to recover in the coming weeks so that they can be fully involved again in winter preparation. If we are spared from bad luck with injuries, I have a good feeling that we can still keep the relegation battle open.
About you personally: You suffered a torn cruciate ligament and have only recently been back to full fitness. How are you feeling after the comeback?
Personally, my health is very good. Of course, I’m extremely happy that I was able to make my comeback a few weeks ago after a very long injury break.
A torn cruciate ligament is one of the worst injuries for any footballer. What did you do afterwards – instead of football – and how did you motivate yourself during rehab?
In the first few weeks after the knee operation, everyday life was very limited. During that time I was very happy that my family, my girlfriend and my friends were there for me. In addition to all the physio sessions and doctor visits, I enjoyed going to the gym to stay physically fit. Of course, on the Sundays that were free for me, I tried as often as I could to cheer on the boys from the sidelines who then made it to the A-district league. Every time my legs tingled, I just realized that I couldn’t do it without it. Accordingly, I did everything I could to be able to get back on the pitch as quickly as possible.
That’s what the coach says
GWO coach Dirk Symmangk says about his “double packer”: “I’m happy for Daniel that he’s player of the week – he really deserves it. He was out for so long with the torn cruciate ligament and has only been back for a few weeks. He is very important for the team – on and off the pitch. You’ve seen that since he’s been back.”
Your coach says nothing but good things about you – both in terms of your performance on and off the pitch. Why do you think you are so important for the team?
I am really happy about that! Dirk could probably answer this question better than me (laughs). I just enjoy football and always try to do my best, both in games and in training.
