Now the story of the unfortunate incident has become a documentary film. “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived” will be on HBO on November 18, reports Variety.
Holmes was 28 when a stunt during the filming of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” went wrong. Today he is 42 years old, and sits in a wheelchair. He was paralyzed from the waist down.
When he now gets his own film, it will be with “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe (34) at the helm. He is the executive producer.
Four years of secret work
The two worked closely together from the very first film, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 2001, until the seventh film – which brought Holmes’ stunt career to an abrupt end.
«Finally the day has come. I can now share with you the entire secret project and four years of hard work that went into making this film», writes David Holmes Instagram Tuesday night.
« Being a stuntman was my calling in life, and ‘double’ Harry was the best job in the world. (…) This film tells the story of not only my achievements in front of the camera, but also the challenges I face every day, and my general attitude towards life after having my neck broken“, he explains – under a picture of himself and Radcliffe.
A planned explosion on the film set first to a highly unplanned outcome. Holmes was originally supposed to be jerked back to his death by a harness, but instead ended up right into a wall before falling to the ground.
The broken neck caused permanent damage to the young stuntman’s spine.
«I am alive only because of the immense love and support that I am lucky enough to have received. And it is thanks to this love and support that I am able to share my journey with you all», writes the 42-year-old now.

In the TV documentary, it is allegedly revealed how his colleagues stepped in to support Holmes and his family after the accident – but that instead it was “Holmes’ extraordinary will to fight that ended up being a source of inspiration for everyone around”.
Dan Hartley (49) is the director of the documentary.
Podcast together
The film is not the first collaboration between Radcliffe and Holmes after the accident. During the pandemic, they started the podcast «Cunning Stunts» together.
Radcliffe stated at the time that he believes there is a myth attached to stuntmen, that they are somehow superhuman.
– When the public sees something really painful or horrible, they think it was a visual effect, or that there is a smart and safe way to do it. Often that is not the case. For example, there is no way to pretend to fall down stairs, explained the actor.
– When you are hit by a car, you are still hit by a car, even if it is going slower than it normally would. They find the safest way to do it, but it can still hurt.
