President Daniel Ortega said that the greatest challenge facing Nicaraguans today is to continue guaranteeing peace in this Central American nation.

Closing the main event for the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Nicaraguan Army last night, the president said that it has been proven that peace is the basis for growth and improvement in all areas.

“And so that Nicaragua can finally be a country with greater economic strength, with greater strength in its armed and service institutions (…) so that the people can escape poverty and have a dignified life,” he said.

Ortega called on people to never forget the nation’s heroes and martyrs or the blood shed throughout history, while affirming that the military institution is an Army that has been forged like steel.

“Because with great limitations, with powerful enemies like the United States, this country, this people of Nicaragua is a people that has been growing and developing throughout history,” he said.

In his speech, given in the Plaza de La Fe in this capital, he highlighted the achievements of the Sandinista National Liberation Front’s Revolution.

In this regard, he referred to the free education implemented in the country’s educational centers, as well as the health system, which he described as extraordinary, since hospitals have multiplied even in the most remote areas of Nicaraguan territory.

In this regard, he mentioned the Mobile Clinics project, a unique initiative of its kind in the Central American region developed with vans seized from drug trafficking through the State Wall of Containment strategy.

The Head of State highlighted the importance of this program, which provides free medical care to thousands of Nicaraguans in the most remote areas of the nation.

During his speech, Ortega also recalled the national literacy campaign developed here in the 1980s and highlighted Cuba’s support, promoted by historic leader Fidel Castro, not only in the educational field, but also in the military.

After reviewing the main historical events that have occurred here, the Nicaraguan dignitary referred to the attempted coup d’état of 2018, mounted by the United States using non-governmental organizations to attack the people who lived in peace.

He described that year as fateful because of all the actions carried out by the coup plotters, who sought to destroy the achievements of the Sandinista Executive.

The president highlighted how the country has been recovering little by little and is currently seen as a developing nation with important economic projects with China, including the Free Trade Agreement signed in January of this year.
