Few athletes in the world can boast of setting a record in their discipline. The one created by the Czech swimmer Daniel Machek in the 1500 meter freestyle in 1978, moreover, withstood 34 long years.

“I had no idea at the time that it would last so long. When I finished swimming, I was outside for a few minutes and I didn’t know if I was going to screw up or close,” says v Finished unceremoniously Machek, whose record was surpassed only by his son-in-law Jan Micka.

At the age of 23, Machek basically had to end his professional career due to health problems. “I didn’t have the feeling at the time that the world was collapsing. In addition, I met my future wife in the hospital at that time,” says Machek, who finished fifth in the 400-meter freestyle race at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

What is a podcast and why don’t you call it Czech?
Podcasts are recordings of the spoken word placed on the Internet where anyone can play them. The advantage of podcasts compared to radio broadcasts is the possibility to listen to your favorite program anytime and anywhere. If you’re on your way to work, on vacation or don’t want to spend the evening staring at the TV, you only need to have your mobile phone with you, ideally headphones. The English word podcast comes from the combination of the words iPod and broadcast, there is no established equivalent in Czech yet. Podcasts since last year they also publish News.

He later returned to swimming in the veteran category and is also involved in extreme triathlons, having completed the legendary Ironman race eleven times.

“I remember that when I started for the first time, it was raining and windy on the day of the start. We still had to swim almost four kilometers, cycle 180 kilometers and run a marathon,” says the 62-year-old athlete, who swallowed incredible amounts of training since he was a child.

Machek talks to Lucía Černá (Šilhánová) in today’s episode of Dobojována about the training sessions, where they swam almost 30 kilometers a day, about education at Red Star Prague or about extreme triathlons.
