Dániel Karsai, who suffers from an incurable disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, abbreviated as ALS), can only move his neck and one leg, but he would not use the option of euthanasia even if it were allowed in Hungary, the constitutional lawyer reveals Popular word from your given interview.
Dániel Karsai recently recovered from pneumonia and was able to leave the hospital after two weeks, but his body is now so weakened that he is being fed through a stomach tube, because he can’t even swallow anymore. The constitutional lawyer was diagnosed with ALS in August of last year, and shortly afterwards he announced that he would apply to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg regarding the restriction of end-of-life decisions in Hungary. Active euthanasia is prohibited by law in Hungary. The case of Dániel Karsai began to be discussed by the Strasbourg board in November, and a verdict may be handed down in May.
Dániel Karsai, who stopped working as a lawyer at the beginning of April, told Népssava that he is not in any pain at the moment, and
even if euthanasia were allowed, he would not live with it.
He admitted that during his time in the hospital he thought about ending his life because he had very severe muscle spasms for several days.
Dániel Karsai, who is already in need of twenty-four-hour help, said several times before that allowing euthanasia would be just an opportunity for him and many other terminally ill patients to make their own decisions about the end of their lives. The constitutional lawyer also spoke in the interview that he is not afraid of death, he just wants to be able to spend as much time as possible with his friends and loved ones. As he put it, if he had the opportunity to go back in time to the time when he already knew that he was incurably ill and was still physically able to end his life with his own hands, he would not do so either.
