Since he received the big salary increase after the 2022 season, there have been discussions about whether he is showing enough performance for the money. 2023 was a busy season, also because his cruciate ligament was torn.
John Mara, co-owner of the Giants, confirmed now that he has no regrets about extending the quarterback’s contract.
Opportunity with a better O-line
“I’m still glad we gave (Jones) that contract because I thought he played really well for us in 22,” Mara said. “He was injured last year and let’s be honest, when he played we did not interfere with anyone. So we’re giving him a chance with a better offensive line and some weapons around him to see what he can do.”
In fact, the 2023 O line was one of the worst the league had to offer. However, Jones also played below average. That is why 2024 is considered a crucial year for the controversial player.
In the draft, general manager Joe Schoen selected dynamic receiver Malik Nabers. “We decided to stay with Daniel and get him a gun and I think that will work well,” said Mara.
It’s hard to set expectations, Mara said. “Obviously I want to see a big improvement on last year. But I’m not going to make any guarantees or special requests or anything like that. But you know what I want to see.”
After a 6:11 season, one thing is clear: “I expect us to take a big step forward,” Mara said.
