Daniel Craig Movie, Queer Banned and Turkish Film Festival Quits

Jakarta – Mubi Fest Istanbul is one of the most popular film festivals in Türkiye. The festival had to be absent this year due to the government’s ban on one of the films they were going to show there, namely Queer.

Daniel Craig’s latest film is thought to contain provocative content that could damage social peace and therefore spark riots. This made Mubi choose to cancel the festival and this decision was announced several hours before the event took place.

Mubi believes that the ban is an intervention that limits art and freedom of expression.

“Festivals are attractive places that celebrate the diversity of art and culture and bring people together.

“We want to take the right position that audiences expect from us and we regret to announce that we have decided to cancel the entire MUBI FEST Istanbul. believe how sad we are with this situation, for their understanding and loyalty We will continue to stand with this issue to protect freedom of expression and artistic expression.”

Queer stars Daniel Craig as an American driver in 1940s Mexico City when he becomes involved with a discharged Navy officer, played by Drew Starkey, star of the Netflix series Outer Banks.

The film is based on the unfinished 1985 novel by William S. Burroughs and is directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) and written by his Challengers co-star Justin Kuritzkes.

There, censorship has been tougher in recent years as the 2022 law severely restricts free speech online and criminalizes the distribution of any disinformation not approved by the government. , according to the Brookings Institution.
