The trial against Daniel Alves has begun in Barcelona on Monday morning.
The 40-year-old Brazilian is suspected of assaulting a 23-year-old woman in the toilet of a nightclub in Barcelona on December 31, 2022.
After arriving in a police van, Daniel Alves took his seat in the courtroom wearing a white shirt, jeans and sneakers, his mother was also present in the courtroom.
Daniel Alves himself denies the accusations, but has changed his version of the incident several times in questioning.
Interrogation for three days
At first he did not claim to know the woman, but when DNA tests showed that there had been sexual intercourse, he changed his mind and claimed that there was consent.
The woman and witnesses are expected to be heard in court on Monday, while he will give his version later this week and the trial is scheduled to last until Wednesday.
As a right-back, Daniel Alves was one of the biggest football stars in the 2000s.
Among other things, he played nine seasons in Barcelona, won three Champions Leagues and played 124 international matches for Brazil.
