Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves was detained by Spanish police on Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Barcelona. The deed should have taken place on December 31 in a night club in the Catalan capital.
The former Barcelona player has been working in the Mexican club UNAM Pumas since the summer, which ended cooperation with him after the scandal was publicized. The information was brought by the AP agency.
Alves appeared before a judge who, after several hours of questioning, agreed to the prosecutor’s proposal and refused to release him on bail. Sexual assault has a wide scope in Spanish criminal law, it can mean everything from sexual harassment to rape.
The local police did not provide any further details about the case, but according to AFP, the woman was said to have complained about inappropriate touching by the football player in intimate places. Alves confirmed for the Spanish television Antena 3 that he was in the said night club, but according to his own words he never saw the alleged victim of the attack.
“I was there with several people and we had fun. Everyone knows that I like to dance, but I don’t need to bother others while doing it.” the defender, who was on vacation in Spain, told AFP. The Barcelona prosecutor’s office started an investigation earlier this month.
The 39-year-old defender worked in Barcelona in 2008-2016 and in the 2021/22 season. During his successful career, he also wore the jerseys of FC Sevilla, Juventus Turin, Paris Saint-Germain or the Brazilian teams Esporte Clube Bahia and FC Sao Paulo. With Barca, he triumphed three times in the Champions League and with Sevilla he has two victories in the former UEFA Cup.
In the Spanish league, he won six titles with Barca, added two with PSG in Ligue 1, and with Juventus he triumphed once in the league on the Apennine Peninsula. He played 126 matches in the Brazilian national team and won the Copa America title twice with it.
