Dani Alves Case: Freedom in Spain has a price, one million euros – 2024-03-29 21:24:27

Brasilia/Prensa Latina

The Brazilian press questions the release, this Monday, from prison in Spain of former soccer player Daniel Alves, despite the trial, with 23 testimonies, which sentenced him to four and a half years for rape.

The renowned journalist Cosme Rímoli describes in an extensive article, published on the R7 portal, how Alves managed to leave prison, after only 14 months in prison, after paying one million euros, the amount required as bail.

He came out “with his head held high, next to his defense lawyer” and “pretended not to hear the journalists’ screams,” while he was protected by the Mossos D’Esquadra, the police of Catalonia, Rímoli says.

It details that the Spanish legislation on sexual crimes is this way, it provides for payments that reduce the penalty or facilitate freedom, while the remedies are trials.

In the case of the former player, it will take months and the guarantee that he will not escape is the delivery of his passports (Brazilian and Spanish).

According to the communicator, the Spanish press reflected this Monday the harsh words of the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, regarding the release of the former athlete, who committed the rape at the Sutton nightclub, on the night of December 30, 2022.

«With the money that Daniel Alves has or someone can lend him, he cannot buy the offense that a man does to a woman by practicing rape, when sex is something done for two and has to be allowed and consented to by two. “That is a crime,” Lula said recently.

Rímoli assures that the majority of Spanish public opinion opposes the release of Alves and the newspaper La Vanguardia revealed the reason why soccer player Neymar Jr. did not pay bail for his close friend: pressure from sponsors.

According to the newspaper, Neymar Jr.’s father learned that the companies that link the image with his son did not agree with this aid to a person that the Spanish justice system classified as a rapist.

The columnist warns that, in addition to the indignation over freedom, there is a specific fear that the former player could flee Spain and come, for example, to Brazil.

The case of another former soccer player, Robinho, who was arrested last week for a nine-year sentence in Italy for gang rape, could be repeated.

Such suspicion is real and Alves, who handed over his passports to the authorities, “traveled by car to a country bordering Spain, rented a private jet and came to Brazil, fleeing.”

The lawyer for the former lateral’s victim vehemently protested against his release.

«It’s a scandal. I am surprised and outraged… it seems that jail is for those who do not have money. “My client feels violated again,” said Ester García.

He stressed that justice in Spain is for the poor.
