Abu Dhabi: Imad Eddin Khalil

The Abu Dhabi Center for Public Health revealed an increase in cases of swallowing magnetic balls recently in children, explaining that 40% of cases required an endoscopic operation to remove magnets, while 20% required surgery.

The center warned of the high risks caused by the child swallowing magnetic balls, as swallowing them leads to problems in the intestines, because they form holes and adhesions in the intestines, and cause suffocation in children, as a result of their entry into the respiratory system.

The Abu Dhabi Center for Public Health added that if more than one of the magnetic balls is swallowed, they are attracted to each other in the intestines, causing holes, adhesions and blockages, and thus the intestines lose their basic function.

It is noteworthy that the life of a 15-month-old child who swallowed 13 magnetic pieces was recently saved in Abu Dhabi at Mediclinic Hospital, after he had bouts of unexplained vomiting. It belongs to his big sister’s games, and the surgical team in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City saved the life of a 13-month-old infant who swallowed 7 magnetic balls, which caused holes in his intestines, as he underwent a delicate surgery by means of an endoscope that took 4 continuous hours.

Doctors warned of the consequences of swallowing magnetic balls, which are one of the most dangerous objects for a child’s life when swallowed, because of the harmful effects they cause in the intestines and digestive system, and may cause holes in the intestines or their explosion as a result of penetration, and this may lead to death, if intervention is delayed. Doctors and surgery to extract it, pointing out that the seriousness of the condition increases with the age of the child, given the child’s inability to express, stressing the importance of the parents’ role in closely monitoring the child, and bringing him to the hospital if any abnormal symptoms are noticed.

They stressed the need for parents to follow up on their children, especially in the crawling stage until the age of 5, because they tend to explore without realizing the danger, and it is known that the child discovers the world around him orally.
