“So ultimately it depends on your own hair preferences,” dermatologist Carol Cheng quoted him as saying SELF.

Dangers of Sleep with Wet Hair

Although catching a cold is just a myth, but there are some risks from sleeping habits with wet hair. The risk of sleeping with wet hair is minimal. Here are two things to look out for.

1. Hair damage

Sleeping habits with wet hair can cause damage to the hair itself.

In wet conditions, hair is prone to damage. Cheng said, in wet conditions, the cuticles will open and make hair more brittle.

“When the cuticle is open, it can stretch more, and make hair break easily,” Cheng said.

This risk is most prone to occur in people who have the habit of sleeping with moving positions.

2. Fungal infections

Sleeping with wet hair will increase the risk of fungal infections on the scalp. Mushrooms, like Malassezia, can trigger the growth of dandruff or dermatitis.

“As much as possible, sleep in the condition of dry hair,” dermatologist Craih Shah said, quoting Healthline.

Along with the fungus that is naturally present on the scalp, the pillow can also become a den of fungi. The fungus thrives in a warm environment. Pillowcases are ideal breeding grounds.

A study found, there are about 6 to 16 species of mushrooms in each pillowcase. Among them are included Aspergillus fumigatus, a species of fungus that can cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems.

How to Safely Sleep with Wet Hair

If there is no other choice but to sleep with wet hair, there are several ways you can do to minimize the risk posed, as follows.

1. Apply coconut oil to the hair

However, this method is not recommended for those of you who experience seborrheic eczema. Coconut oil can only make things worse.

2. Use air conditioners

Conditioner helps close hair cuticles and reduce friction.

3. Dry the hair first

If you can dry your body quickly, then do the same thing with the hair.

The less water your hair has, the more damage it can minimize. Be sure to break down your hair before going to bed to avoid extra stress on the hair.

4. Use a silk pillow

There is some evidence to suggest that sleeping on a silk pillowcase is better for the scalp. Silk will make the skin dry out quickly and avoid hard friction.
