Dangers of Intimate Relationships Changing Partners
Obstetrics and gynecology specialist Dr Ivan Rizal Sini, SpOG explained that there are many dangers posed by the habit of changing partners in intimate relationships. One of the dangers that can arise is contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
“The multiple partner lifestyle will increase the risk of problems such as HIV, hepatitis C and several types of diseases transmitted through sexual intercourse, chlamydia,” said Dr Ivan when met in Central Jakarta, Friday (10/11/2023).
“Not only in the short term, the short term is also dangerous. Not only is it just an infection, it can also affect infertility and transmission of the HPV virus which is linked to cervical cancer,” he continued.
Dr Ivan said that the habit of changing partners greatly increases the risk of transmitting HPV which can cause cervical cancer. Not only that, HPV also has the risk of causing oropharyngeal cancer when engaging in oral sex.
“Contact can occur in various ways, yes, but yes, we are talking about HPV, especially in the cervix, but there are also other additional risks when people have sex, it can also increase the risk of cancer in the larynx, in the oral cavity. That is also something. that we are also worried about,” he said.
Therefore, in order to maintain healthy intimate relationships, Dr. Ivan strongly advises people who have the habit of changing partners to stop.
Apart from that, Dr Ivan also emphasized the importance of using condoms when having intercourse to prevent transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Quoted from the World Health Organization (WHO) page, condoms significantly reduce the risk of STIs when used consistently and correctly during vaginal, oral and anal sex.
This contraceptive protects against STIs that spread through fluids, such as HIV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. This also includes protecting against STIs that spread through skin contact, such as syphilis, genital herpes, and HPV when lesions occur in areas covered by condoms.
“Condoms themselves are very good protection for preventing HPV which causes cervical cancer. But not only that, the risk of transmission can occur if the habit of changing partners is still there,” he explained.
