Ibuprofen is used to treat pain and does not require a prescription, which means it is very easy to obtain.
But recent studies indicate that these medications can have serious – and sometimes fatal – side effects when taken regularly, according to theSun.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen, have been linked to stomach ulcers, fertility, hearing and cardiovascular problems — and, more recently, an increased risk of blood clots.
For healthy people who need a little painkiller from time to time, there’s nothing wrong with taking an anti-inflammatory medication, pharmacist Thoron Govind tells The Sun.
But taking these medications for a long time can cause other serious problems and needs to be discussed with a doctor.
1. Stomach ulcer
Tags include:
Burning or gnawing pain in the center of the abdomen
Indigestion
heartburn
Feeling sick
Experts say that taking pain relievers that contain NSAIDs is one of the most common causes of stomach ulcers, because they reduce the body’s ability to form a layer of mucus that protects the stomach lining from stomach acid.
Stomach acid is strong enough to erode your teeth and bones.
In your stomach, it can burn into the wall, leaving open sores, also known as ulcers, the NHS says.
2. Fertility
Symptoms of low testosterone known as compensated hypogonadism include:
Erectile dysfunction in men
Low mood
Shrinking muscle mass
exhaustion
Men who take large doses of ibuprofen for several months at a time may be at greater risk of developing fertility problems.
Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that healthy young men who took the common painkiller for up to six weeks produced less male sex hormones, resulting in a condition typically seen only in older men and smokers.
People ages 18 to 35 who participated in the Danish study developed a disorder called compensated hypogonadism within two weeks of taking 600 mg of ibuprofen twice daily.
The condition arises when the body does not produce enough testosterone.
3. Hearing problems
Signs of hearing loss:
Difficulty hearing others clearly and misunderstanding what they say, especially in noisy places
Asking people to repeat themselves
Listening to music or watching TV at a higher volume than others need
Difficulty hearing on the phone
Difficulty following a conversation
Feeling tired or stressed from having to concentrate while listening
When you think about the risk factors associated with hearing loss, over-the-counter pain relievers probably aren’t one of them.
But a study conducted by Harvard University and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that taking ibuprofen frequently could play a role.
In the study, women who took painkillers at least twice a week were more likely to suffer from hearing loss, and frequent use increased the risk by up to 24%.
The results are similar to a study of men with hearing loss, although aspirin was also found to contribute to an increased risk in that study.
Scientists believe that the drug could cut off normal blood flow to the cochlea, which is located in the inner ear, so that its structure does not work as it should.

4. Heart problems
Symptoms of cardiac arrest
Tired
Dizziness
shortness of breath
Nausea
Source
Heart palpitations (rapid or pounding heartbeats)
Unconsciousness
Several studies have linked NSAIDs to an increased risk of serious heart disease.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2016, the authors noted that reports of adverse heart reactions began to appear in 2000.
Some research published in 2017 found that the drug could increase the risk of cardiac arrest by 31%.
The researchers, from the University of Copenhagen, were so shocked by the results that they decided the drugs should not be sold in supermarkets or gas stations, and should only be available by prescription.
Cardiac arrest occurs when someone’s heart stops pumping blood around the body, similar to an electrical malfunction.
A person experiencing a cardiac arrest will likely fall unconscious immediately and show no signs of life, causing them to stop breathing.
This is different from a heart attack, where a person usually remains conscious and will often notice chest and arm pain.
5. Blood clot
Symptoms of a blood clot include:
Throbbing or cramping pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in the leg or arm
Sudden shortness of breath, severe chest pain (may be worse when breathing), and coughing or coughing up blood
Women who take ibuprofen and hormonal contraceptives together are at greater risk of developing blood clots.
The researchers, also from the University of Copenhagen, found that when the pill is taken alongside hormonal contraception, it can increase the risk of venous thromboembolism, or blood clot, by five-fold.
This could lead to a heart attack or stroke.
They stressed that the overall risk remains low, but given the widespread use of both drugs, women should know about potential interactions.
