Dangers of High Electricity Costs for New Yorkers | Univision 41 New York WXTV

As the tri-state area faces, along with the nation, the worst inflation in years, the high cost of electricity could double in the summer months, something that could be deadly for some New Yorkers, as many choose to turn off the air conditioning, a measure that year after year has proven its dangers.

The New York City Department of Health reported that between 2010 and 2019, there were 102 heat stress deaths during the 2010 to 2019 hot season in New York City.

This means that there was an average of 10 deaths per yearwith a maximum of 33 in 2011, a year that had one of the hottest heat waves during the period of time examined.

Don’t turn off the air, learn to use it

Most deaths occurred in July (73%) and August (15%).

In 2020, there were 4 heat stress deaths, although that number is provisional and subject to change because mortality records are not finalized yet.

In 2022, electricity costs are forecast to be 12% higher than last summer, according to the Public Utilities Commission. However, the authorities ask New Yorkers not to do without air conditioning, and rather to learn how to use it, as well as become familiar with measures that can help them reduce electrical energy, but without endangering their health or his life.

Measures to save on the cost of electricity

  • Use fans to keep the house cool…

  • Clean the air vents to remove any accumulation of dust.

  • Take cold water baths.

  • Reduce the use of hot water, as this represents 18% of the household’s energy.

  • Keep the air conditioning in a single temperature, without changing it.
