TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Vitamin and certain minerals are needed by the body for bodily functions to do their best. Lack of nutrition can make the body weak and tired, and even make you sick easily.
It is for that reason that many people choose supplements, most often in tablet form. However, drinking it can also pose health risks. Dr. Ross Perry, medical director of skin clinic Cosmedics, warns of the dangers of consuming too much vitamin D.
“Vitamin D is an important nutrient that the body needs in small amounts to remain functional and healthy. Vitamin D helps the body use calcium and phosphorus to make bones, muscles and teeth healthy and strong,” he told Express.
“A lack of vitamin D can cause bones to become soft and weak and lead to loss. The main source of vitamin D is the sun. Vitamin D deficiency is related to lack of energy and fatigue. So it is natural to get a daily dose through natural sunlight and it will increase energy levels,” he added.
However, consuming too much vitamin D is also dangerous. “Taking vitamin D supplements for a long time can cause calcium to build up in the body and can weaken bones and damage the heart and kidneys,” said Perry.

Recommended dosage
You should not consume more than 100 micrograms a day. “Applicable to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, the elderly, and children aged 11-17 years,” said Perry. “Children aged 1-10 years should not have more than 50 mcg, and babies under 12 months should not have more than 25 mcg.”
Vitamin D levels that are too high in the blood can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, pain, loss of appetite, dehydration, frequent urination and thirst, and kidney stones.
“Vitamin D levels that are too high can cause kidney failure, irregular heartbeat, and even death. High vitamin D levels are always caused by taking too much vitamin D from supplement diet. “You shouldn’t take too much vitamin D from the sun because the skin limits the amount of vitamin D that is absorbed,” said Perry.
