Code orange is in effect for 4 areas
An extensive Mediterranean cyclone is the cause of the first serious winter situation in our country this season. In the next 48 hours, significant amounts of rain will fall on the Balkans, and in the areas where enough cold air from the north manages to penetrate, snow will fall with accumulation of snow cover.
An orange code for snowfall has been announced for the districts of Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv and Smolyan. A yellow code has been issued for seven other districts in Western Bulgaria. For Kardzhali, the code for snow and rain is also yellow, and for Haskovo – only for rain.
“Winter has already come. Snow fell in Kyustendil and Gotse Delchev. It is still raining in Sandanski. Snowflakes are already flying in Sofia”. This was stated in the “Hello, Bulgaria” studio by NIMH weather forecaster Anastasia Kirilova.
In the course of the day, snow will fall first in South-Western, and then in almost all of Western Bulgaria. In the afternoon, snowfall will be especially intense in the Rilo-Rhodope region, some valleys in the Sub-Balkans, as well as in North-West Bulgaria. Meanwhile, in the eastern half of the country, the precipitation will be from rain – in Haskovo, Kardzhali and Yambol regions in significant quantities.
During the day, the snow cover will vary from 5-6 centimeters in the plains to 25-30 in some foothills and mountainous areas. There will be conditions for winds, sleepovers and traffic complications on the mountain roads and passes throughout Western Bulgaria.
It will snow again overnight and during the day on Friday. Again, in areas to the east, the precipitation will be mostly rain. Later in the afternoon and overnight on Saturday, there will be conditions for heavy snowfall in Stara Planina, the Pre-Balkans and the Danube Plain, and in the early morning on Saturday also in Northeast Bulgaria. In Dobruja, the predicted snow cover will be between 5 and 10 centimeters.
By the end of the week, daytime temperatures will drop and fluctuate between 0 and 5-6 degrees in Western and Central Bulgaria. In the eastern regions – up to 9-10 on Thursday and Friday and slightly lower on weekends.
