Dangerous storms on Sunday – weather service warns

Heavy rain and lightning spoil Sunday evening: The weather service warns of severe weather in and around Dresden. A city festival also has to be cancelled.

The district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains warned of severe storms in Kreischa near Dresden on Sunday evening. According to the report, there is currently a danger to “life and limb from lightning strikes” in the Lockwitzbach, and there could also be heavy rain in the evening.

The district therefore issued a warning in the Nina app in the evening. In Kreischa, flooding of streets, aquaplaning and even landslides are possible due to the rain in the evening, the warning said. The districts of Babisnau, Kautzsch and Bärenklause are affected.

The German Weather Service (DWD) expected heavy rain of between 30 and 40 litres of rain per square metre per hour in Dresden and the south of the city in the evening hours. Along the border with the Czech Republic, heavy rain warnings were also issued in Chemnitz and Bautzen.

In Dresden, the city festival “Canaletto” was cancelled on Sunday afternoon after it had already been interrupted several times due to the first storms. Read more about it here.

The Dresden fire brigade was out on Sunday due to around 180 weather-related operations; at around 6 p.m., 100 operations were still open. So far, no injuries have been reported.
