A batch of Carnaroli rice under the Carosio brand, sold on the shelves of the Lidl supermarket chain, has been recalled as a precaution due to chemical risk. Also pay attention to the Coop brand pasta salad dressing jar: it may contain pieces of glass. The Ministry of Health announced this.
The reason for the rice recall is that in some one-kilo packages, with an expiry date of February 2025 and barcode 20505318, traces of cadmium above the permitted limits were found. The recalled Carnaroli was produced for Lidl by the Curti srl company, in the Valle Lomellina plant, in the province of Pavia.
The risks for those who take too much cadmium
The ministry, in its note, urges consumers not to eat it and to return it to the point of sale to receive a refund. Ingesting excessive doses of cadmium, a substance classified among certain human carcinogens, increases the risk of developing tumors. When the concentration of the substance in food becomes too high, symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting occur. Chronic intake can also cause demineralization of the bones – i.e. a greater risk of fractures -, kidney failure, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems.
Possible glass pieces in the jars
But Carnaroli rice is not the only product removed from the shelves in these hours. In fact, the Ministry of Health reports that the Coop supermarket chain has also opted to withdraw two batches of dressing for pasta salads. Glass fragments may be present in the 285 gram Coop brand glass jars – lot numbers TF224 MFE173 and TF224 MFE177 and with an expiry date of August 2025. Also in this case, buyers are asked not to eat the condiment (which was produced for Coop Italia by Fratelli Polli Spa in the Eboli plant, in the province of Salerno) but bring it back to obtain a refund.
