Dangerous Misconceptions and Myths about Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Critical Study

KOMPAS.com – Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is increasingly being used in various fields, according to a new study, can lead to dangerous misconceptions.

This misconception of AI, according to Stefan Popenici, a leading expert from Charles Darwin University (CDU) as reported by Phys, Wednesday (16/8/2023), explains that AI is discriminatory and this is vulnerable to racial and sexist bias.

In addition, he warned, the inappropriate use of artificial intelligence could lead education into a global crisis.

The public is urged to be able to use AI wisely and do more than just hype AI.

Not only that, this study also suggests that society can also analyze the risks associated with the adoption of technology in education after artificial intelligence invades and colonizes the public imagination around the world in late 2022 and early 2023.

Dangerous myths about AI

Popenici addresses two of the most dangerous myths about AI in education. Among them is the belief that artificial intelligence is objective, factual and unbiased.

Whereas in reality, AI is directly related to certain values, beliefs, and biases.

The second myth is about the belief that AI does not discriminate. Even though basically, artificial intelligence is discriminatory which refers to the lack of gender diversity in this developing field.

“If we think about how technology actually operates, we realize that there was not a single point in human history when technology was not directly linked to certain cultures and values, beliefs and biases, religious beliefs or gender attitudes,” he said. Popenici.

He further revealed that there are consistent studies and books providing examples of AI algorithms that discriminate against and grotesquely amplify inequalities, targeting and victimizing the most vulnerable.

In this study, Popenici highlights how the priorities differ between higher education and ‘Big Tech’ developments, with the conspicuous and dangerous absence of critical thinking about automation in education, especially in the case of AI.

The lack of awareness of AI in education has an impact on the use of student data. Another impact on privacy, as well as their ability to think critically and creatively.

While ‘Big Tech’ in this case the dominant company in the information technology industry, driven by the goal of gaining profit and power, control and financial advantage.

Popenici added that educational institutions and teachers have very different goals, namely to advance knowledge and cultivate educated, responsible and active citizens who are able to live a balanced life and make a positive contribution to society.

“It is misleading and dangerous to believe that artificial intelligence is intelligent. There is no creativity, no critical thinking, no depth or wisdom in what generative AI feeds the user upon command,” Popenici explained.

He further said that intelligence, as a human trait, is a term that describes a very different set of skills and abilities.

Intelligence in this respect is far more complex and more difficult to segregate, label, measure or manipulate than any computing system associated with AI marketing labels.

The study titled ‘The critique of AI as a foundation for judicious use in higher education’, which is a critique of the use of artificial intelligence in education, has been published in the Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching.
