Dangerous isolation: a neurologist explained how loneliness provokes the development of diseases

What can a lifestyle without live communication lead to?

Loneliness can cause health problems. Marina Anikina, a neurologist, parkinsonologist, dementologist, candidate of medical sciences, spoke about this live on the Doctor TV channel.

People became convinced of the danger of isolation when they experienced a pandemic. Then the elderly family members were forced to be alone for some time.

The lack of live communication and attention provokes some risk factors that contribute to the development of dementia syndrome.

The first factor is an increase in body mass index. People want something sweet, tasty, fatty in order to brighten up everyday life. But in old age, high-calorie foods can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, as these diseases have become often associated with obesity.

The second factor is a decrease in physical activity. It is very important to move more. From the age of 40, muscle tissue begins to shrink by about 5% per year, even when people move fully and without pain. From the age of 70, the figure reaches 12% and continues to grow.

Therefore, moving, doing gymnastics, special exercises is important in order to stay in good shape and counteract dementia.

The third factor influencing the onset of dementia is the lack of new interests and emotions. Many may object: “But it’s not like that! My grandparents or elderly parents are keenly interested in new events, news feeds, and in general they are interested in everything, everything that happens in the world.

But more often than not, older people overreact to negative emotions, and this, in turn, leads to increased levels of depression, anxiety, and associated sleep disturbances.

Scientists have not yet found a cure for dementia. However, the disease can be prevented. Nutrition remains an important factor. What foods should be included in the diet to protect yourself?
