The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) revealed, on Wednesday, new information related to the two devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria, with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.6 on the “Richter” scale.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said that the earth’s crust moved by 7.3 meters due to the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.
“The earth’s crust shook violently for two minutes during the two earthquakes. The depth of these two earthquakes ranged between 8.5 and 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth,” Orhan Tatar, director of earthquake risk reduction in Avad, explained in a press conference held on Wednesday in Ankara.

- The double earthquake struck a wide area of Turkey that is larger than many countries in the world.
- We are facing an unusual situation, and the total number of aftershocks so far has reached 3858.
- The number of aftershocks whose magnitude ranged between 3 and 4 on the “Richter” scale amounted to 1253, while the number of aftershocks between 4 and 5 on the “Richter” scale amounted to 394, and the number of aftershocks whose magnitude ranged between 5 to 6 degrees was 38.
It is worth noting that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 41,000, while millions need humanitarian aid.
