Dangerous Herbicide Dinoterb Found in North Holland Water Raises Alarm for Environmental Organization MOB

Last month, environmental organization Mobilization for the Environment (MOB) reported that the herbicide dinoterb had been found in North Holland water. This drug was used according to NH News Formerly used in bulb cultivation, but was banned by the European Union more than 25 years ago.

Found in nature reserve

The poison, which can be carcinogenic, has been found in several places in the province. It has also been found in the Zwanenwater nature reserve near Callantsoog. The weed killer is especially harmful to pregnant women. The drug is also dangerous for mammals.

The North Holland Water Board announced an investigation yesterday. It is still completely unclear where the poison comes from. “Any accusation against any address is premature,” says Jos Beemsterboer, who is responsible for water quality at the water board.

A bulb grower informed NH Nieuws last week that the product is no longer used in that industry. “It is clear that it is not our fault. That assumption makes no sense. It comes from the air, not from agriculture.”

The water board will also check its own measurement data, ‘to really be sure whether what is stated is correct,’ a spokesperson said earlier.
