Danger on the Plate: Red Meat Increases the Risk of Diabetes – Expert Recommendations on Consumption

A new study by American foreign researchers suggests that the risk of diabetes increases with the number of red meat steaks you eat. Two portions or more per week could be dangerous, our doctors say. In Romania, the annual consumption of pork exceeds three kilograms per person, double the recommendations. And, worryingly, in 10 years, the number of diabetics increased by 40%.

The study coordinated by Harvard researchers made observations on a sample of over 200,000 Americans. 10 percent of the subjects, or 22,800, developed diabetes after their diet consisted mostly of red meat. The conclusion – the consumption of this type of meat increases by 62% the probability of developing the disease.

Anca Hâncu, diabetologist: Red meat has those Ham type groups, which differentiate it from white meat, it also has saturated fats which, when they are in excess and bring an excess of calories, will lead to the development of visceral adipose tissue which it is directly related to cardiovascular diseases through the pro-inflammatory effect. And so it leads to, basically, these pro-inflammatory cytokines and the pro-inflammatory action is the open door to cardiovascular diseases, to diabetes, to hyperuricemia, gout and various types of cancer.

The risks of diabetes are lower if we replace red meat – pork, beef, lamb, game – with proteins from other sources.

Andreea Petrescu, Observer reporter: The study also showed that in the case of people who replaced a portion of red meat with a portion of dairy, nuts or even white meat, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes decreased by up to 30%.

A 2021 Nielsen study shows that almost all Romanians eat meat every week, and half of them almost daily.

Consumers-reporter: More chicken consumption.

– Do you avoid red meat?

– I only consume very, very rarely, now it’s also very expensive to be honest. Prediabetes, that is, I am ready to develop diabetes.

– I knew and it is not recommended, more chicken, turkey meat, about twice a month consumption, more turkey and fish, I also make steak, once a month a grilled steak.

Diabetologists recommend healthy people to include in the weekly menu at most two portions of 120 grams of red meat. and in the case of sufferers, things get complicated.

Daciana Toma, Romanian Society of Diabetology: Red meat is at the top of the pyramid because it should be consumed very rarely, i.e. once or twice a month, because we are talking here about the content it has, the more the you know with certain pathologies. It is very good to eat red meat with vegetables, but this does not mean that we can eat red meat more often.

Anca Hâncu, diabetologist: We have half of the vegetable plate, a quarter of the slice of meat, the meat should be the size of our palm and we have the amount of carbohydrates, cereals, rice, bread.

Ana is from Bucharest, takes care of her husband who suffers from diabetes, and learned how to use the daily menu as medicine.

Ana, wife patient with diabetes: Her blood sugar was 100, 103, 105 now. I avoid red meat as much as possible, it is not good from all points of view. Poultry, lots of vegetables, fruit. Two or three times a month, if I feel like it.

Diabetes is a common disease in Romania: one in 10 people suffer from it.
