Danger of floods and mudslides in several counties

The Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE) has issued a yellow hazard warning for landslides, mudslides and floods in parts of Agder, Rogaland and Vestland counties.

Published:

The warning applies from Sunday evening to Monday evening.

– There is locally a lot of rainfall, which applies from late tonight until tomorrow. 40 to 50 millimeters is expected in six hours from late tonight, and then it will change to thunderstorms tomorrow morning, says meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute, Anne Solveig Andersen, to VG.

She says that there may be some storm water, and that people should be observant with regard to driving conditions – especially near streams and rivers.

Temperatures and wind contribute to snowmelt. The risk of triggering slush avalanches applies particularly in areas with more than 30 centimeters of snow.

– Sørpes avalanches can be released on relatively gentle slopes where water collects. The landslides are often channeled down depressions and stream courses and can then develop into flash floods. The danger of landslides and slips applies to areas with little snow and frost on the ground, it says NVE’s notice.

Flood warning

A yellow flood warning has also been issued in the aforementioned counties.

– The water flow will increase in small streams and rivers during Sunday evening and Monday morning due to heavy rainfall and some snowmelt. This can lead to local flooding and erosion damage, it says NVE’s flood warning.

A lot of rain is expected on Sunday evening and the night to Monday, and the meteorologists warn of shaky conditions in the mountains.

Many people who are on winter holiday during the day probably have to be extra careful. A number of avalanche danger warnings have also been sent out this weekend.

Precipitation in the east

Despite a windy start to the weekend, far better weather is expected in Southern and Eastern Norway on Sunday.

– A snow forecast has been sent out in southern Norway from the night to Monday. In Eastern Norway, it will be more cloudy and rainy tomorrow, says meteorologist Andersen.

She says that on Sunday there will be snow showers in the North due to mild air, but that this will disappear tonight.
