The number of corona infections in the Australian city of Sydney has risen again, despite a lockdown of almost six weeks. The authorities today report five corona deaths and 259 new corona infections in the city. In the state of New South Wales, of which Sydney is the capital, the total number of infections came to 262.
The five people who died from the virus were not or not fully vaccinated, New South Wales Prime Minister Berejiklian said. “No one who died has been vaccinated twice. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for everyone to be vaccinated.”
Berejiklian pointed out that the spread of the delta variant of the virus cannot be stopped by more measures, but by more vaccinations. “We know that too many employees, hospitality workers or carers, are not vaccinated, and that is a huge risk.” The end date for the lockdown in Sydney is August 28.
To help enforce the strict measures, the military is deployed, but the unrest among the population is increasing. After a year and a half, support for the strict corona policy begins to decline. Critics point out that people in poorer neighborhoods are being dealt with disproportionately. The residents of these neighborhoods often have a migration background and do lower-skilled work. The lockdown has serious financial consequences for them, as they are usually unable to do their work from home.
