18 dance groups from different cities of Latvia will perform in a magnificent concert on the stage of the Emīlas Dārziņš concert hall at Kalnciema street 10 k-2, Riga. The proceeds of the concert will be dedicated to the support of the artist and the opportunity to return to Latvia.
The tradition of dancing in honor of Vija Vētra’s birthday, which started in 2019, will continue in 2024. This year, with a diverse program and performances, Indian classical dancers, flamenco and modern dance groups, neoclassical and contemporary dance styles will meet on one stage. Also, a wide age range is represented at the concert – from children to seniors. Of course, Vija Vētra’s choreography will also please you. It is safe to say that every step and measure will delight both the dancers and the audience, as well as the jubilarian, who will celebrate her 101st birthday far away from us, but will be close in thoughts and inspire all dancers. With this concert, Latvian dancers will greet the jubilarians and look forward to returning to Latvia.
Foundation Vijas Vētras Foundation a wide group of participants responded to the invitation to dance in honor and joy of the artist’s anniversary, and it is already customary that the concert Dance Storm gathers on stage dancers with a very wide age range – from 5 to 75 years old and also older. As every year, Odissi Indian classical dance performer Aija Dwinska, center of Indian culture, will dance Bharata dance studio, Jūrmala Culture Center BG dance studio, flamenco dance studios Flamenco Sun and ZambraPārdaugava children and youth center Altona, dance studio Fandango, exotic dance center Happinessdance school Colour Pointsenior dance groups Snow cone and Preilene, exotic dance studio Soul Sister and Liepāja dance studio Arabesque. At the concert Dance Storm 2024 dance groups will participate for the first time Shoes and JOSEPH, flamenco dance studio Elf, dancers from the studio Ballet lessons and a dance group Stars from Dikļi parish of Valmiera region.
Concert Dance Storm 2024, similar to the previous foundations Vijas Vētras Foundation the organized ones Dance Storm concerts, is a charity event whose purpose is to popularize dance as a way of human development, the fellowship of dance collectives and meeting on the same stage in honor of Vija Vētra. However, an important goal is to attract funding to support Vijas Vētras: to cover the costs of the artist’s stay, transportation, and medical care in Latvia. Fans of the art and personality of Vijas Vētras and everyone who is fascinated by the art of movement and music are invited to donate funds and support Vijas Vētras.
Vija Vētra was born on February 6, 1923, in Riga. She studied choreography in Vienna. Together with many Latvians, she traveled to Australia, where she lived for sixteen years and began to learn Indian dance traditions. In 1962, Vija Vētra returned to Europe, where she performed in dance concerts and also taught dancing. Since 1964, Vija Vētra has been living in New York at the artists’ house in Manhattan. The artist has performed in Australia, America, India. Following the invitation of Imantas Ziedoņš, Vija Vētra has been returning to Latvia every year since 1990 to visit his homeland and meet his fans of talent.
On June 20, 2023, the foundation Vijas Vētras Foundation organized a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the artist’s life and 80th stage activity at the Riga Latvian Society House, in which the artist herself performed and pianist Vestards Šimkus participated. Those present witnessed the Vijas Vētra dance performance, including the premiere of the dance Injured migratory bird with choreography by Vijas Vētras and music dedicated to the anniversary by composer Artūrs Maskats. The foundation Vijas Vētras Foundation in collaboration with IB Media Productions and the Latvian Occupation Museum prepared the “Interview of the Century” in the summer of 2023 – VIJAI VĘRAI 100.
