NEW YORK – Art lovers in New York City can watch a show that combines dance and theater with international dancers Daniel Fetecua Soto and Blakeley White-McGuire.
Both are part of it The tongue of the flame which returns to perform on 18 and 19 November at Westbeth Studio Theater. In addition, the opera will be danced for the first time with original music created by the Colombian composer Pablo Mayor.
The tongue of the flame is a CAVES project, a theatrical dance workshop formed in 2021 by Daniel Fetecua Soto and Blakeley WhiteMcGuire through which the artists commit themselves to: Compassion in artistic creation, vulnerability in collaboration, emotion in creation and sensuality in the presentation of all their dances and collaborations with the community.
Drawing on their careers with the iconic modern dance companies of Martha Graham and José Limón, the artists transcend the genre in this 40-minute piece that explicitly explores control, submission and care.
The work, which includes nudity, premiered during the COVID-19 lockdown in New York, then toured Medellin, Colombia before returning to New York for this latest iteration with original music.
Blakeley White-McGuire is originally from Southern Louisiana and currently lives in New York in various roles as a creative artist, dancer, choreographer, educator and writer. She has received international critical acclaim as a principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where her repertoire includes Lament y Run an errand in the maze, receiving the prestigious Positano Premia La Danza award for contemporary dance. He is featured in The New York Times As a dancer of “powerful technique, dramatic talent and engaging modern spunk”, Blakely has also appeared in many works by contemporary international choreographers.
For his part, Daniel Fetecua Soto, a Colombian resident in New York, works in dance choreography and performance, cultural and educational programming, and as a producer of theater and arts festivals, including Latitudes Dance Festival, which promotes and presents Native Latin American companies. and international. Soto danced as a soloist with the José Limón dance company from 2006 to 2016 in roles including Earth Day, Emperor Jones y Chaconne. He appeared as a guest in Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring and Tannhauser.
Colombian musician Pablo Mayor is first and foremost a creator whose creative compositions and concepts forge new territory in the global landscape of contemporary Latin American music. His versatility ranges from the creation of the Urban Folklore Orchestra “El Barrio Project – SALSA” to “Untold Tales”, a multidisciplinary work inspired by the stories of immigrants from all over the world, by music and dance collaborations with Daniel Fetecua Soto. His compositions are featured in Berklee City Music’s Pulse Latino software on the rhythms of South America and Mexico, and he traveled to Latin America with Berklee’s education program, creating links between music education and a country’s cultural roots. .
