Dance Lessons and Events in New York City this Summer

Summer in New York is much more than the humidity and the stifling heat in the subway. It’s also the season of good deals to have fun for free or at low cost. In French Morning, you are often told about outdoor screenings, water activities or music festivals. How about learning a few dance steps this year? There are no shortage of options.

In a park

Like every year, the New York Department of Parks has a very rich program this summer. In a park, on a handball court or in a municipal leisure center, free dance lessons are offered every day across the city. To name but one, the project Summer on the Hudson offers workshops for all ages, especially seniors, at Riverside Park (between 59th Street and 153rd Street). With Alvin Ailey

Enjoying the know-how of one of the best dance companies in the world for zero dollars is also the magic of New York. From July 31 to August 5, the Ailey School, school of the mythical Alvin Ailey troupe, will criss-cross the five boroughs to give free dance lessons to New Yorkers as part of its Ailey Moves NYC program. Rollerdance lessons

This is THE plan for you to play it during your dinners in town: the rollerdance lessons of the Frenchwoman Cécile Klaus, founder of the female company Miss’ile. Every Wednesday and Sunday in July and August, the artist invites you to meet at 7pm at Pier 3 in Brooklyn Bridge Park for an introduction to dancing on rollerblades, where participants will learn a few steps and movements, as well as a choreography as a grand finale. Midtown Dance

Offices, shopping and… salsa? This summer, Midtown is getting into the dance by hosting free classes two days a week on Herald Square Plaza (West 34th Street and Broadway). Every Wednesday between 6pm and 7pm, place at Many Style(s), a series of introductions to a wide variety of styles, from hip hop to bachata, through swing and Caribbean dance. Each course is provided by one or more instructors until September 20. Then, on Fridays, from August 4 to September 22, it’s salsa night between 6pm and 8pm. Lincoln Center

If you walk past Lincoln Center these days, you’ll spot a giant disco ball on the forecourt. She holds out her arms to you! This summer again, the Upper West Side arts center is rolling out its dance floor for his Summer for the City. The concept: a big dance party, which starts with a class around 7pm and ends with a concert. On Thursday, August 3, renowned salsa musician Eddie Palmieri, winner of ten Grammy Awards, will set the mood while choreographer and producer Talia Castro-Pozo, a renowned figure in the New York salsa scene, will lead the course.
