Dance floors out of control

In some bars, several revelers act as if distancing measures do not exist.

During the night of Friday to Saturday, at the Muzique night club on boulevard Saint-Laurent, in Montreal, masked employees were trying to enforce the rules, but the big dance floor was out of control.

The establishment had added tables to try to avoid regrouping, without success: many people danced within two meters of each other.

At the Terrasses Bonsecours, in the Vieux-Port, you could even see violations in the queue at the entrance, where smokers and passers-by congregated.

Questioned to this effect, one of the security agents admitted that it was impossible to control the comings and goings of all.

“It would take a night club of 400 people who do not respect the measures enough to start a pandemic,” worries Pierre Thibault, president of the New Association of Bars in Quebec.

Too late ?

Despite the good intentions of the staff, he noticed a relaxation of their vigilance and of the behavior of customers after a certain hour.

This is also why many interviewed tenants now open earlier in the afternoon to close around 11 p.m. or midnight.

Still, some owners seem to disregard sanitary rules. “There are some who are downright proud,” observes Jean-Sébastien Michel of the Alkademie.

These are the ones who should be shut down by the authorities, and not those who do their best to combine with sometimes confused constraints, he argues.

“It would be boring to have to close because of other bars that don’t give a damn about it”, abounds Manny Vides from Dirty D, in Brossard
