It was difficult for his wife, says the American choreographer. She also had to keep his drinking problem a secret. “She always knew about it. But I always told her I had it under control.” Even after he had children with his wife, his drinking problem did not disappear. He calls it “unfair” towards her.

Dan says he sometimes drank alcohol in front of his children, but he waited until they went to bed before he really drank much. But one day, after drinking the night before, he looked bad, he says. Which his daughter also saw. “She said: you don’t look well.” That moment when she looked at him like that. “That was the moment I went to my wife and said: I can’t take it anymore. But I don’t know how to solve it myself.”

Dan spent 25 years with a drinking problem. He always convinced himself that he had it under control, ‘but I hadn’t’. He needed help, says Dan. “I finally got that help at the clinic”. The American is now also sharing the news in the hope of helping others with this.
