Cort won in the finish at Monforte de Lemos in front of the Portuguese Rui Oliveira and the American Quinn Simmons, with whom he and several other riders had escaped from the beginning of the 192 km long stage.

Cort continued the triumphs from the sixth and twelfth stages, scoring his seventh Grand Tour victory. “It’s unbelievable. If it’s a dream, I hope I don’t wake up from it,” said the 28-year-old Danish cyclist.

“It was very difficult and I started to believe in victory up to about six kilometers before the finish,” he added. “I also have to thank my teammate Lawson Craddock. If he hadn’t escaped with me, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. He did an incredible job,” Cort said.

Roglič maintained the lead and before the penultimate mountain stage and Sunday’s final time trial with a goal in Santiago de Compostela is close to the third overall triumph on the Vuelta in a row. He is two and a half minutes ahead of the Spaniard Enric Mas.

The best of the Czech riders today was Jan Hirt, who lost a minute and 21 seconds to Corta in 97th place. Zdeněk Štybar finished in 137th place, his teammate from the Deceuninck-Quick Step team Josef Černý finished in 142nd position. They both lost more than 26 minutes.
