With the water-filled protective dams, the fire brigade of the city of Lucerne has a new tool to prevent future flooding.
The protective dams have a total length of 400 meters. They are in a container and can be built up in modules, as the city of Lucerne announced on Wednesday. The elements are filled with water and stop flooding near the shore.
The new dams will be used on the Neustadt side along Bahnhofstrasse and, according to the city, can be built within a very short time. The system costs CHF 360,000 and the city also makes it available to other communities if required.
Mobiliar Versicherung covers the costs for the mobile protective dams. During the last flood last summer in the canton of Lucerne, it had to deal with over 8,000 claims. According to the insurance company, Lucerne is one of the flood strongholds in Switzerland.
