New setback for the “Star Wars” cinema universe. Ever since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, fans of the Star Wars saga have been eagerly awaiting the next movie from a galaxy far, far away. But as the US trade journal “Deadline” now reports, “Lost” maker Damon Lindelof (49) is said to have left his “Star Wars” film project. Along with Lindelof, co-writer Justin Britt-Gibson is said to have dropped out of the upcoming untitled feature film, while filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (44) is still scheduled to direct.
Damon Lindelof: ‘If It Isn’t Great, It Shouldn’t Exist’
Lindelof’s “Star Wars” film was considered the most likely candidate for an early theatrical release, along with the project under development by “Thor 3 and 4” director Taika Waititi (47). It was announced earlier this month that the “Star Wars” movies by Marvel boss Kevin Feige (49) and “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins (51) are history.
“Lost” and “Watchmen” series creator Lindelof already indicated problems with his planned “Star Wars” movie about a week ago. In an interview with “SlashFilm”, the 49-year-old said “rated the level of difficulty” of the film project as “extremely high,” adding, “if it’s not great, it shouldn’t exist”.
According to the Above the Line website, which first broke the news, Lindelof and Britt-Gibson submitted their draft script to Lucasfilm before leaving the project. The next theatrical release of a “Star Wars” film is scheduled for December 2025. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2024. Returning Disney boss Bob Iger (72) declared a few weeks ago: “We’re still developing ‘Star Wars’ movies, but we’ll make sure that when we make one, it’s the right one.”
