the essentials in brief

Damar Hamlin has taken another important step towards an NFL comeback. On Monday he returned to the field for the first time since April. He then spoke about his return in a press conference.

“It’s another milestone,” Hamlin told reporters Monday. “We’ve cleared medical hurdles… it’s another milestone on this journey.”

“It feels incredible,” he continued, speaking of his first training session in several months. “It’s a roller coaster of emotions. I was pretty upset just because it’s my first time back. But God doesn’t make mistakes. I follow God’s schedule. As much as the NFL has its schedule and training camp starts that day, it’s all God’s timing.”

Damar Hamlin on cardiac arrest: ‘I practically lost my life’

“I practically lost my life playing this sport,” Hamlin said. “I am rooted in my faith. I am rooted in the love I receive from my family, my teammates and love from around the world. That keeps me going. And I still have goals that I want to achieve in this game.”

Hamlin was diagnosed with commotio cordis, also known as a heart concussion, in January. This is an extremely rare heart condition that occurs at exactly the wrong time in the heart’s rhythm, causing the heart to effectively stop beating.

During the Jan. 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Hamlin collapsed from a tackle and had to be resuscitated on the field. After a long period of rehabilitation and care from various doctors, he is now preparing for his NFL comeback.
