Damar Hamlin can return to the American football field. The 25-year-old American suffered a cardiac arrest in early January, but has recovered and has been given the green light by the doctors.
Hamlin lay motionless on the floor on January 2 during an NFL game with his Buffalo Bills team. He was resuscitated and then taken to hospital. There his condition improved after a few days.
Hamlin can now focus on his sport again. “He’s got his doctors’ full clearance,” Buffalo Bills manager Brandon Beane told Tuesday ESPN. “And he has a great positive attitude about getting back on the pitch.”
For the time being, Hamlin will have to stick to training, because the competition is currently on hold. The new NFL season will not kick off until September 7.
Hamlin has already reported to the club to work on his condition. “In the end, returning to the field is of course the goal,” he said in February. “I’m doing everything I can to improve my condition. But it’s in God’s hands.”
There was – as far as possible – also a positive side to Hamlin’s cardiac arrest, who founded a charity for children in need in 2020. This foundation saw many millions of dollars flowing in after the incident. Hamlin also made a tour of politicians in recent months to increase the number of AEDs (defibrillators) in schools and universities.
