At the end of August, information was received at the VP Liepāja station that a Volkswagen car had been stolen in Grobiņa. Police officers found the car on the same day and detained two juveniles who had previously been in the police’s sight on suspicion of committing a crime.

Continuing the criminal proceedings, evidence was obtained that young people were involved in other crimes at the end of August, such as property damage, namely a burglary, theft of two bicycles and an attempted theft of a quadricycle in Cimdenieki, the theft of a navigation device as well as an attempt to steal a car radio from a car showroom in Durbe region.

The investigation revealed that the young people had gone to Grobiņa to steal the car, but the condition was to look for a car that was not locked. In order to get to Grobiņa, they tried to start a quadricycle pushed out of the garage in Cimdenieki, but when it failed, they stole two bicycles from the stairwell of the house and went to Grobiņa, where they also found an unlocked car, which could be entered without any problems. There was no problem for the young people to start either, because the keys were already in the vehicle, so the VP repeatedly calls on the residents to protect their property and close the car doors, not to leave the windows open and not to leave the keys in the car.

One of the young people is remanded in custody for the duration of the investigation, while the other is remanded in custody.

According to the Criminal Law, theft, if committed by entering a vehicle, apartment or other premises, as well as theft of a vehicle is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine with or without confiscation of property. Theft, on the other hand, is punishable by a small amount of imprisonment for up to one year, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine.
