The Groningen Mining Damage Institute (IMG) has transferred 368,000 euros to people who are not entitled to it. The money should have gone to people who reported damage as a result of gas extraction in Groningen, but they have not received anything to date.
The error has so far been discovered in 28 payments in the past two months, according to IMG. On average, this is just over 13,000 euros per compensation. The payments have been transferred to different wrong bank account numbers. How this could have happened is still under investigation.
“The erroneous payments date from the period June and July 2021,” a spokesperson told RTV North. “Our first priority is now to ensure that the rightholders are paid the amount to which they are entitled in the short term.”
The people who have wrongly received money must pay it back. “The IMG will recover the amounts unduly paid out.” The IMG will contact these people and the people who should have received the money.
